Is your Internet Connection Slow?

If your Internet connection has slowed it might not be your service provider that has slowed it down.  If it takes a very long time to open Web pages or sending/receiving emails takes longer than normal you might have an internal problem.

What might cause your Internet slowness?

Your Internet slowness can be caused by one or any combination of the following:

  • Computer Viruses - programs that disrupt or intentionally harm your computer and/or network.  Viruses are typically spread by email, Internet downloads, CD/DVD, etc.
  • Trojan Horses - also known as a trojan, is a program that appears to perform a desirable function but in fact performs undisclosed malicious functions
  • Rootkits -- programs or a combination of several programs designed to take fundamental control of a computer system.  Typically written with the intention of computer disruption and the capability of spreading themselves from computer to computer
  • Malware -- programs designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system, can be some sort of combination of all of the above.
  • Spyware -- programs written to track your Internet activity so that data can be sold to marketing and/or advertising agencies.
  • Adware -- programs written to redirect your Internet browser to advertising pages or popup web pages with advertisements.

What other problems can occur?

Besides the downtime and loss of productivity caused by removing any or all of the above you may also have problems that affect your business on a whole.  You may have your Internet Service Provider (ISP) cut your service until you get the problem(s) fixed. Typically if you are affected with rootkits/malware/trojans your computer will max out your Internet connection by sending out junk email.  If you get your ISP to turn your Internet connect back on and the problem is not fixed or comes back your ISP may drop you as a customer without notice.  If you host your own email you may also be considered email spammers and be put on many email blacklists.  Email blacklists are lists of Internet address spaces (IP) that are considered to be email spammers.  If you are put on one or more of these blacklists you may not be able to email to your customers/suppliers because their email system blocks IP domains that are on various blacklists.
